October 10 marks World Mental Health Day, an international day for global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy. Here in Genesee County, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint is committed to creating a community where everyone can thrive emotionally and mentally.
According to the 2022 Flint and Genesee County Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), 19.5% of residents report experiencing more than 14 poor mental health days a month—surpassing both state and national averages. The community identified mental health as the second most important health concern, followed closely by access to mental health services.
By listening to the voices of the community, the Community Foundation recognizes the vital role mental health plays in the overall well-being of Genesee County residents through its broad health grantmaking.
Here’s how Community Foundation-funded grants are making a difference:
Pathway to Change
Through the Pathway to Change program, the Gerholz Center for Christian Counseling provides counseling to address mental and emotional health challenges experienced by residents in Genesee County, opening doors to hope and healing. Supported by the Tuuri Health Fund, this program addresses the psychological, social, and basic needs of Genesee County residents who are seeking help.
Prism Project Safehouse Program
The Prism Project Safehouse Program provides a safe, supportive environment for child survivors of sex trafficking. Funded by the Tuuri Health Fund, this long-term safehouse offers trauma-informed care with services such as education, therapy, medical and spiritual care, and life-skills services.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County
With the help of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County, Flint youth have access to mental health-focused mentoring and family engagement. Funded by the Flint Kids Fund, this mentoring program builds resiliency in the community.
InvolvedDad’s DIALOGUE Program
InvolvedDad’s DIALOGUE program, also funded by the Flint Kids Fund, focuses on supporting boys, young men, fathers, and caregivers. The program aims to break cycles of emotional challenges, contributing to a brighter future for all Flint families.
