As the world’s top athletes with a range of disabilities prepare to showcase their skills at the Paralympic Games in Paris, a growing number of local athletes are finding their place in the spotlight.

43 adaptive golfers and 11 trained adaptive golf coaches took to the driving range to kick off the Ally Challenge presented by McLaren at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club on August 19.

The McLaren Adaptive Golf Clinic teamed up with the U.S. Adaptive Golf Alliance in its third year to provide an array of adaptive golf equipment and instruction to participants. The clinic marks a rising movement in adaptive golf, ensuring its accessibility to a wider audience.

Participants, representing a range of ages and abilities, were recruited from McLaren Health Care’s patient base, as well as through the USAGA, RehabWithoutWalls, the Disability Network, and word-of-mouth. Most participants hailed from Genesee County, further highlighting the local impact of the clinic.

“The McLaren Adaptive Golf Clinic really underscores the inclusive nature of golf,” said Laurie Prochazka, vice president of marketing at McLaren Health Care. “We are so pleased to be able to offer golfers whose physical disabilities require them to use adaptive golf or techniques the opportunity to have camaraderie with fellow golfers, and just be able to enjoy the game.”

The clinic’s expansion was made possible by a grant from the Shannon and Ridgway White Fund and the Claudette Wilkinson Bryant Memorial Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint. This support allowed the clinic to double the number of participants and extend the program’s duration.

The event began with inspiring demonstrations by the trained coaches, who showcased innovative ways to golf using adaptive techniques. Participants then received personalized instruction in chipping, putting, and driving, with each station tailored to their individual needs.

“I love all things that involve healthy living and a healthy lifestyle,” said Community Foundation trustee Shannon White. “It’s amazing that this opportunity is being provided to those who might not ordinarily participate in golfing, and it’s so fun to see them having fun.”

The Ally Challenge presented by McLaren is the week of August 19-25 at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan. For more information about the Ally Challenge presented by McLaren, visit https://theallychallenge.com/.
