In Flint and Genesee County, people and organizations are hard at work improving public spaces, enhancing neighborhoods, and bringing people together through shared efforts. From beautification projects to large-scale revitalization plans, these initiatives are creating lasting improvements across the community.

Beautify Burton
Beautify Burton is on a mission to make Burton bloom. The community-led initiative removes debris from shared spaces and delivers flowers to residents. Volunteers join clean-up efforts and help plant flowers that brighten the city.
In 2024, with support from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, they distributed flower boxes and flats to over 100 residents. This year, they aim to expand their reach by distributing 150 flower boxes, 25 flats of flowers, and 1,000 tree seedlings. Residents interested in participating can apply by Thursday, May 1.

Pierce Park
Pierce Park in Flint has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once a former golf course, it has been reimagined with support from the Neighborhoods Small Grants Program and the Mary Elizabeth Adams Manley Beautification Fund. Volunteers—including Manager of Corporate and Foundation Relations Rebecca Pettengill—have worked to upgrade culverts, restore trails, and make the park more accessible and inviting.
Sherry Hayden, secretary of Pierce Park Nature Preserve, reflects, "Our volunteers and park users experience a deep sense of place, love for our little place on Earth, and the sense of community."

Keep Genesee County Beautiful
Keep Genesee County Beautiful (KGCB) is dedicated to encouraging, educating, and engaging residents in creating beautiful, clean neighborhoods and public areas throughout Flint and Genesee County.
In 2024, the CFGF Youth Advisory Committees and the Flint Center for Educational Excellence gathered at Iroquois Park to help with a community cleanup and beautification project with KGCB.

State Park in Flint
Genesee County’s first-ever state park is coming to Flint. The 230-acre development will be located along a three-mile stretch of the Flint River and part of Swartz Creek. The project includes updated trails, new landscaping, improved lighting, and expanded access for recreational use.
A collaborative effort between the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and state partners has established a $40 million endowment with the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to support the long-term maintenance and growth of the park.

Genesee County Parks
Genesee County Parks has been offering recreational activities and maintaining community spaces for over 50 years. One program funded by CFGF in 2024 supported a licensed Day Camp at For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum, which focused on personal growth and building respect for others through group activities.
Genesee County Parks offers free admission to all visitor centers and grounds, making its resources widely available for residents across the area.
